英語の「less ～ than」（〜ほど…でない）の意味と使い方

形：less ～ than
意味：…ほど〜ではない（程度が低い）
less + 形容詞・副詞 + than で、「…ほど〜ではない」と程度が低いほうに比べて表します。not as ～ as とほぼ同じ意味です。

形の作り方

形容詞less + 形容詞 + than ～less expensive than that
副詞less + 副詞 + than ～less often than before
数えない名詞less + 名詞 + than ～less sugar than usual
最上級the least + 形容詞the least expensive

例文

  • This hotel is less expensive than the one near the station.
    このホテルは駅の近くのホテルほど高くありません。
  • I eat out less often than I used to.
    以前ほど外食をしなくなりました。
  • Today's test was less difficult than I expected.
    今日のテストは思っていたほど難しくありませんでした。

使い方のポイント

  • less ～ than は not as ～ as とほぼ同じ意味です（less expensive = not as expensive）。
  • less は長い語と一緒に使うことが多く、短い語では not as ～ as を使うことが多いです（not as tall as）。
  • 数えられる名詞の複数形には、less ではなく fewer を使うのが正式です（fewer people）。

正解：3. less

than と組んで「〜ほど疲れない」と程度が低いことを表すのは「less」。fewer は数えられる名詞の数が少ないことを表し、形容詞の前には置けません。
