英語の「either A or B / neither A nor B」の意味と使い方

形：either A or B / neither A nor B
意味：A か B のどちらか / A も B も〜ない
either A or B は「A か B のどちらか」、neither A nor B は「A も B も〜ない」を表します。

形の作り方

使う時形例
どちらか一方either A or Beither today or tomorrow
どちらも〜ないneither A nor Bneither tea nor coffee
主語になるときEither A or B + B に合わせた動詞Either you or he is wrong.
否定文の中not ～ either A or BI don't eat either meat or fish.

例文

  • You can pay either in cash or by card.
    お支払いは現金でもカードでもできます。
  • Neither my brother nor I can swim.
    兄も私も泳げません。
  • We will go either to Nara or to Kyoto this weekend.
    今週末は奈良か京都のどちらかに行きます。

使い方のポイント

  • either A or B・neither A nor B が主語のときは、動詞は B に合わせるのが基本です。
  • neither A nor B はそれだけで否定の意味なので、not と一緒に使いません。

正解：2. Neither

後ろの nor と組んで「部長も助手も〜いなかった」と表すのは「Neither」。Either は either A or B のように or と組む語で、nor とは組みません。
