英語の「instead of / rather than」の意味と使い方

形：instead of / rather than
意味：〜の代わりに・〜よりむしろ
instead of は「〜の代わりに・〜しないで」、rather than は「〜よりむしろ」と、一方ではなくもう一方を選ぶことを表します。

使い方のポイント

  • instead of のあとは名詞か -ing 形です。instead of drive とはしません。
  • rather than は「〜よりむしろ」と好みや選択を表し、後ろに動詞の原形を続けることもできます（walk rather than drive）。
