英語の「It is said that ～ / be said to ～」の意味と使い方

形：It is said that ～
意味：〜と言われている
「〜と言われている」と、多くの人が言っていることや、話として伝わっていることを表します。be said to ～ でも言いかえられます。

形の作り方

使う時形例
It を主語にするIt is said that + 主語 + 動詞It is said that he is rich.
人・物を主語にする主語 + be said to + 動詞の原形He is said to be rich.
前のことを言うbe said to have + 過去分詞The old house is said to have been a school.
ほかの動詞It is believed / thought that ～It is believed that the lake is very deep.

例文

  • It is said that this old tree is over 1,000 years old.
    この古い木は樹齢 1,000 年を超えると言われています。
  • Kyoto is said to be the best place to see autumn leaves.
    京都は紅葉を見るのにいちばんいい場所だと言われています。
  • It is said that cats can sense changes in the weather.
    猫は天気の変化を感じ取ることができると言われています。

使い方のポイント

  • It is said that he is kind. は He is said to be kind. と言いかえられます。
  • They say that ～ や People say that ～ もほぼ同じ意味で、会話でよく使います。

答えと解説

正解：1. to reduce

be said to ～ で「〜すると言われている」。said のあとは to + 動詞の原形なので「to reduce」。reducing のような -ing 形は said のあとに続けられません。
