英語の感情・判断の「should」（「It is strange that ～ should」）の意味と使い方

形：It is strange that ～ should
意味：〜するとは（驚き・判断の should）
strange・natural など感情や判断を表す語のあとの that 節で should を使い、「〜するとは」という気持ちを表します。

形の作り方

使う時形例
驚き・意外It is strange / surprising that + 主語 + should ～It is strange that he should say so.
当然It is natural that + 主語 + should ～It is natural that she should be upset.
残念It is a pity that + 主語 + should ～It's a pity that you should miss it.
should を使わない形that + 主語 + 動詞（ふつうの時制）It is strange that he said so.

例文

  • It is strange that he should be so late. He is usually on time.
    彼がこんなに遅れるとは不思議です。いつもは時間どおりに来るのに。
  • It is natural that parents should worry about their children.
    親が子どものことを心配するのは当然です。
  • It is surprising that such a small town should have three bookstores.
    こんなに小さな町に本屋が 3 軒もあるとは驚きです。

使い方のポイント

  • この should には「〜すべきだ」の意味はなく、話し手の驚きや判断の気持ちを表します。
  • should を使わずに、ふつうの時制で It is strange that he is late. と言うこともできます。
  • 書き言葉で使うことが多い、かたい言い方です。
